Hull History Centre
The creation of the new Hull History Centre was a joint venture between Hull City Council and Hull University, bringing together the material held by the City Archives and Local Studies Library with those held by the University.
We were appointed undertake the full mechanical, electrical, public health and lift services designs for this development.
Our designs covered the creation of integrated, state-of-the-art storage and public access facilities including reading rooms, teaching and learning facilities, a visitors’ café and staff office space. We created a close-control environment to house the conservation laboratory and BS5454 archive stores.
By undertaking thermal modelling early in the design process we were able to specify low energy and passive solutions including natural ventilation. Working closely with the architects, we optimised temperature stability by making best use of the building’s own exposed thermal mass. In combination these measures, along with an energy review and provisions for wind turbines have secured the Centre a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating.
