Herbert Gallery & Museum
Situated in a historic square with the City’s iconic Cathedral, the gallery formed an important facet of this public space. A refurbishment and extension improved the facilities throughout the gallery and museum, adding a two-storey, glazed courtyard area that also serves as the new entrance.
We were appointed to carry out full mechanical, electrical, public health and lift services refurbishments during phases 2 and 3 of the development. Our designs incorporated the refurbishment of existing exhibition areas, library facilities and offices, as well as the creation of new galleries and public spaces in the two-storey extension. These designs included a structured wiring scheme supporting a flexible provision for both the gallery and staff areas. A clean environment was developed to accommodate conservation laboratories with fume cupboards, and over 21,000 ft² of archive stores, which are designed to BS5454 standards.
Low energy and passive solutions were incorporated wherever possible, and by making use of the building’s own thermal mass we were able to maintain stable temperatures in most of the public spaces. The areas housing art are served via air conditioning systems utilising HEPA filters and carbon filters.
