It's snow joke for Olly
18th August 2016
We are proud to announce that we have welcomed another new, high calibre engineering undergraduate to join our popular industrial placement scheme. Oliver Wells – Olly to us – is studying for a Masters in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Surrey, and heard about our 2016/17 student search through his faculty placement board.
Olly, who joined us during the first week of July, is already a firmly entrenched member of the team, and is presently involved in a number of major schemes for the company. “What drew me to the placement scheme with SVM was the promise of a fast-paced, well-structured year where I would be exposed to the full spectrum of building services design disciplines. It meant that not only could I put some of my mechanical engineering understanding into practice, but also I could learn about electrical design and the way in which the firm applies the expertise of its Energy Studio to every project. So far I have worked on the design of the lighting scheme, for an 82,000 ft², 8-storey office building, electrical drawings for another commercial office project, and created AutoCAD designs for a major 3,000-apartment residential development on the Greenwich peninsular.”
At university, Olly is a member of the Formula Student racing team where he is involved in the assembly and testing of their single-seat race-car. Formula Student (FS) is a high-octane, global competition run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and is attended by 130 universities from 30+ countries. The University of Surrey’s FS team are currently ranked 14th in this hotly contested forum. Olly’s in good company here at SVM as our team of petrol heads already includes Ollie Miles (you can never have too many Olivers in an office!) who joined us from Red Bull Racing in April.
When he’s not racing or engineering you will find Olly on the slopes; mostly on skis but sometimes on a snowboard. But this isn’t just a hobby or a wind-down. Oh no, this is seriously serious; Olly trains on indoor snow and dry slopes 2-3 times a week, and all his annual holiday allowance will be spent in the Alps where he receives professional coaching to prepare him for competitions.
And just to be sure boredom doesn’t take hold, Olly has set up his own online snow sports retail shop – www.wellsnowsports.co.uk - where he is the exclusive distributor for some of the sport’s best-loved brands.
So, welcome to the SVM team, Olly. We hope you’ll enjoy your time with us.
