A man of many hats

Taariq Mauthoor, Associate Director at SVM Consulting Engineers, has been appointed as the International Director for CIBSE’s Energy Performance Group. This new role is in addition to his ongoing responsibilities as the EPG Group Secretary … and also as head of the SVM Energy Studio.
Taariq has been a member of CIBSE’s Energy Performance Group (EPG) for over five years. In 2012 he was appointed as the Group’s secretary where he assisted in the launch of publications and arranging events to raise the Group’s profile globally. In recognition of Taariq’s work, coupled with his pioneering strategic designs in the field, the members of the group appointed him as International Director in August 2016.
“CIBSE’s Energy Performance Group has over 23,000 members worldwide, and 56% are based outside the UK offering enormous scope to influence construction and engineering’s role in the international climate change agenda.” says Taariq. “This new role brings many exciting challenges, and it’s a privilege to be in a position where I can contribute to the knowledge of my peers, who are also striving to improve building performance.”
In his current role as head of the SVM Energy Studio, Taariq is responsible for the delivery of energy strategies and high-performance designs for the company’s spectrum of projects. His focus is on efficient engineering that enhances a building’s performance and can withstand the impact of future climatic conditions. Taariq designed the energy strategy for The Music Box in Southwark; one of London’s first buildings to meet the new GLA carbon reduction targets. To keep up to speed with our Energy Studio work and ruminations you can now follow our Linked In showcase here.
Taariq also plays a lead role in SVM’s mentoring programme, guiding our graduates, industrial placements and new starters through the principals of energy-efficient building performance designs. Notably, he has mentored our 2014/15 industrial placement student, Ketan Depala, during his final year dissertation on ‘overheating in buildings under future climate conditions’. Ketan achieved a first class honours for his work, that Taariq describes as “crystallising some major issues, the outputs of which will be of mutual benefit to the wider building services industry and academia.”
With his CIBSE EPG International Director hat on, Taariq is currently working with the UK Department for International Trade to shape the UK-centric input into the international energy performance debate. The group will be developing a global hub of best practice, acting as a resource for the sharing and gathering of information, trends and training. Fellow EPG board members are currently located in Hong Kong, Singapore, Qatar and Dubai.
