Working with us

We’ve created a dynamic environment for our engineers: our offices are open-plan, and we’ve banished director’s ‘offices’.  Working side-by-side with peers, support staff, CAD team and the directors inspires the free flowing of ideas, information and discussion.

Unlike many other practices, our three directors are all fee-earners, taking an active role in every one of our projects.   Our clients truly value this approach, and it’s one of the many reasons we can boast a healthy percentage of repeat business.  As an engineer for SVM you will benefit from the years of experience of our senior team, working in a constructive environment that supports you as you fulfil your potential.

We encourage all our engineers – graduates and seniors alike - to build an informed opinion, shaping the nature and scope of our engineering design response.  This approach enables us to deliver original, innovative and exciting solutions for our clients and allows your expertise and interests to shine through. It’s this inclusive, flexible culture that makes us a magnet for talented graduates and experienced engineers alike.

Industrial Placements Scheme

Our Industrial Placement Scheme is open to applicants who are studying Mechanical or Electrical Engineering at university. The scheme is a one-year placement and is located in our head office in Berkhamsted.  We open for applications around February of each year, shortlist and interview in April, and then you start your Industrial year with us in July.

You will be working alongside some of the industry's most talented engineers, gaining a valuable insight into building services engineering systems design, improving your practical application of engineering theory and gaining an insight into the dynamic world of construction and consultancy.

Your day-to-day tasks will vary; for example you could be producing detailed designs and drawings, using the latest computer modeling software, doing a site survey, or researching technologies and products. Communication will also be an important part of your role including regularly emailing and speaking with project teams, meeting clients and end users, writing reports, and attending meetings.  To read how our 2016-17 Industrial Placement, Olly Wells, described his role and experiences, click here.

Graduate recruitment

Fancy starting your engineering career in a dynamic Building Services design consultancy where you can help shape the future of construction? Then here’s your big chance!!

Each Spring - just before exam prep takes over your every waking moment - we commence our search for pragmatic and meticulous engineers to join our team. Ideal candidates have a 2:1 BEng Honours degree (minimum), and will enjoy the variety, exposure and opportunity that only come from working in a medium-sized practice. What awaits you is an exciting and challenging array of projects, a structured mentoring framework, and support with further studies as you strive towards your Chartered Engineer status.

As a graduate engineer, you’ll play a critical role in designing how buildings operate. You’ll work collaboratively with colleagues, architects and other construction professionals across a range of building types and sizes.

Successful candidates will be joining one of the top building services practices in the South East, in our friendly open plan offices. It’s a vibrant, creative space that encourages ambition and collaboration, and rewards excellence.

Training & development

Individual talent is incredibly important to us, and when we spot it we like to provide the support and opportunity for you to develop and advance your skills.

We believe in stoking the individual drive of our employees, expanding their skills both within and beyond the traditional confines of their chosen discipline.  We won’t just give you new skills, new opportunities and teach you about every aspect of the engineering design world; we’ll help you grow as an individual too.  If that sounds like we want to push you to achieve your full potential, then that’s right. We do.

Here’s how we’ve supported our engineers recently:

  • Funding and coaching one engineer in her postgraduate studies to achieve a diploma in Energy & Sustainable Building Design
  • Supporting one of our graduate engineers through his degree, and then funding his studies for a masters in Sustainable Energy Systems
  • BIM training – not only for our CAD team but also for our engineers
  • Funding one of our recent graduates to become a qualified SAP Assessor
  • We support your ongoing CPD endeavours with a bespoke programme of regular, in-house ‘picnic’ seminars offering bite-sized skills refreshers (with lunch!)

Down time

It’s important to us that our employees form bonds on a personal level, not just over a computer screen, so we bring the ‘work-hard, play-hard’ ethos into effect on a regular basis.  Within the past year we have been tobogganing, rock climbing and pitch-and-putting, and in the summer we host a barbecue for all our staff and their families.
