Victoria & Albert Museum

British Galleries

The refurbishment of the British Galleries was a major project for the V & A museum covering 4,500m2 of this Grade I listed building. The completed exhibition space was opened by Prince Charles in November 2001, and incorporated full air conditioning and security surveillance to permit a high level of open display.

The new galleries house British collections from between 1500 and 1900. Objects displayed outside glass cases for the first time will highlight the quality and breadth of the V & A.

SVM was responsible for the full mechanical and electrical design duties including lift consulting and on site supervision.

The engineering design included air conditioning, standby generation, security and fire alarm systems, electrical distribution, lighting and communications.

The galleries team  that undertook this development forward brought together experts and practitioners from many fields. SVM was proud to work alongside such well known people as Dinah Casson and David Milinaric.

SVM was awarded 'Consultant of the Year' in 2002 for our dedicated work on this project.
