Uppingham Community Primary School
Leicester Road Primary School, Rutland
This new school in Uppingham is predicted to have a BREEAM "Excellent" rating. High Levels of insulation coupled with effective thermal mass, control winter heat loss and summertime over heating. Fully automatic ventilation operates at night to cool the class rooms for the following day. Ventilation air is drawn through a ground floor void which is warmer in winter and cooler in summer which reduces energy requirements and increases the effectiveness of the ventilating air.
SVM have undertaken full thermal modelling of the thermal performance of the building looking at energy flows and internal temperatures with zero heating energy input.
High frequency lighting and controlled IT loads limit electricity consumption and electricity is generated from four 6kW vertical axis wind turbines. Surrounded by open country these produce a large proportion of the school electricity requirements. Provision is also made for a 300 panel photo voltaic array and as the price of PV cells drops they can be incorporated again reducing the reliance on fossil fuels and increasing the proportion of renewables.
Domestic hot water heating is solar assisted and a comprehensive building energy management system ensures that the energy features of the school are a constant learning resource.
